Academic Writing Style Guides

Last week you learned about formatting long academic documents. Academic writing often comes with certain guidelines to follow so that there is consistency within a discipline. For example, you have already learned how to add an image attribution, how to cite a reference to a journal in text, and how to create a reference list using the APA 7th Referencing Style Guide. These guidelines provide a structure that once followed ensures conformity, making it easier to focus on the content and ideas in the document.

The organisations that create the referencing style guides, often also create style guides for academic writing. For example, APA has developed a Student Paper Setup Guide to align with the APA 7th edition Referencing Style Guide. These guidelines explain how to reference, title, and caption (title) a table or figure.

There are many organisations that have developed their own referencing and writing guidelines, that you may encounter in your studies. To keep things simple, we will focus mostly on the APA Writing Style Guide.
