25 Stems

The main function of the stem:

1. Supports and connects the other organs of the plant
2. Stores food
3. Key area for growth

Buds are one of the most significant features of the stem when recognising plants.

Buds are key growth points on the stem.

Buds will develop into new plant parts – stems, leaves, flowers and/or fruits.

They are swollen areas on the stem that may be either brown or green and can be found in leaf axils (axillary buds) and at the ends of branches (terminal buds).

Finding Buds

Example of buds on a stem

• Look at live samples.
• Identify buds on at least five different examples, including buds above simple leaves and compound leaves.
• If you are having difficulty, please ask the lecturer as it is very important you are able to identify buds when you are looking at leaves.
Remember key hazards for plant handling and their controls.
