4 Common Names

Common names are the names we give plants in our own languages.

For instance, common plants in Top End gardens include croton, frangipani and golden cane palms.

Common native plants in Northern Australia include Swamp Bloodwood, Milkwoods and Black Wattles.

Usually, common names are easy to say and remember, but they can cause much confusion. The common name for a plant in one area may be the same as the common name for another species in another area.

For example, in northern Australia, the plant whose scientific name is: Acacia auriculiformis is known locally as Black Wattle, but if you google Black Wattle on Wikipedia, there are several different plants known as black wattle in other regions of Australia.

This is why it is vital that you learn and use the scientific names of plants in the industries you are currently working in or starting out in.

World wide there is ONLY ONE scientific name of each living organism.
