26 Modified Stems

Yes, more parts of plants besides roots are modified. Some stems for example, don’t look like stems or carry out different functions to those normally performed by stems.

Purposes:

Stems can be modified for storage (cacti, potato’s, onions, lilies), reproduction (garlic, crocus, strawberries, many ferns, bamboo), defence (thorns – bougainvillea, Carissa species) and photosynthesis (Cacti, Jacksonia sp.)

Pachycaul stems of plants such as Boabs, desert roses, etc.
