What features do we look for to distinguish one plant from another?

To recognise plants, you need to consider all relevant features that lead to an informed judgement on the correct identity of the plant you are inspecting.

You need to consider:

  • Habitat
  • Roots
  • Branching/ not branching
  • Bark/no true bark
  • Leaves
  • Flowers/floral parts
  • Fruit/s
  • Seed/s
  • Modifications
  • Habit
  • Form

In the next section, we will look more closely at the latter two, plant habit and form.
