The main functions of roots are to:Taproot vs Fibrous root

1. Anchor the plant into the soil
2. Absorb water and dissolved minerals from the soil
3. Conduct water & nutrient up to the stem
4. Store food
5. Sometimes to create new plants (asexual reproduction)

Two main root types

There are two main types of root systems visible –

taproot and fibrous root systems, as shown here.

These are often easier to identify in young plants.
