9 The Origin of Plant Names

rosea = rose pink; rubra = red; etc showing latin origins of many words

Plant names mostly have Latin origins because this was the international language of science when Linnaeus devised his naming system. There are also some Greek influences.
Some plant names are descriptive,  giving information about plant form, colour or other characteristics.
Some are commemorative, relating to people and events, or show association with an area or region.
