8 Collect: Data Wrangling

Don’t forget to keep notes during your shoot. Consider taking notes on who says what, best takes, progress on your shot list or progress and other comments. You might like to keep a to-do list also.

A lot of time may go into planning before you shoot and then into editing at the end, but often the shooting phase can be the most people and resource intensive.

It’s your team’s responsibility to look after what you’ve filmed. That means the footage, the data, and any memory cards or storage. It can be expensive or unachievable to try and capture some shots again. May sure you keep your footage safe and out of the elements. Consider on-site backing up. Or at the very least make backup copies back at your base, including off-site.

In the IT world, there is a saying about backups. “Data doesn’t really exist if it doesn’t exist in three different places.” Consider having three copies of all of your footage at all times.

Now it’s time to get onto editing!
