6 Collect: Testing Your Workflow

It is up to you to work out what camera and configuration suits your project. But one thing you should always do in selecting and configuring: TEST YOUR WHOLE WORKFLOW!

This means:

  1. setting up the camera, mics, or other equipment you intend to use
  2. then filming some different types of test shots with different settings
  3. removing or transferring the video files to your editing computer or equipment
  4. importing the files into an editing project
  5. completing a quick edit timeline test
  6. exporting your test film
  7. and then critically viewing it from a technical point of view

It is a common mistake made to not test your whole workflow, only to find that some of the steps that you intend to do are very difficult and require lots of problem-solving.

To be a filmmaker in today’s digital world, you do have to get to feel comfortable with computers, IT, data handling, and management. Or at least have someone on your team that is. Things develop and change at such a rapid pace that is it very hard to be an expert. Get used to using Google to search for ways to solve problems or issues that you may come up against in your workflow.
