11 Editing Steps

  1. Import your footage and all other assets into your computer, tablet, phone or editing system. If your system allows, organise them into a set of folders such as:
    •  Footage – Raw Video Files
      • Include if possible Date, Title, Camera Make, Camera Number or Camera Operator
    • Audio
      • Music
      • Voice Overs
      • Sound Effects
      • Temporary Audio
    • Graphics
      • Images
      • Animations
      • Titles
    • Screen Captures
    • Draft Files
    • Completed Video
Check out this video for more detail on folder structure:

Some software will have it’s own structure also, but MAKE SURE YOU UNDERSTAND where it is storing and putting all of your files and program files.

2. Create a new timeline and drop in all video files in the same sequence they were shot.

3. Sync up any multi-camera or external audio tracks

4. Do a quick scan of your footage, and start refining by removing anything you know you won’t use. You might like to edit backwards, starting from the end of your timeline and working backwards. Likely this means you will be working with best takes first.

5. Move any clips that need to be in a different part of the sequence to tell the story properly. Get things in the right order.

6. This is end of the first stage. Sometimes this is called an assemble edit. Create a duplicate copy of your timeline so your have pre-refined copy before your start refining.

7. Repeat steps 4, 5 & 6 until you are happy with the story that you have built.

8. Add in all extra audio, music or sound effects

9. Repeat step 7 until you are satisfied

10. Add in any titles, text or graphics: You might like to try out some of the simple built-in text overlays that many NLE (non-linear editing) programs have built-in, or play around with building your own.

11. Add in any transitions or video effects: https://www.cyberlink.com/blog/cool-video-effects/68/best-video-transitions-effects

12. Do any colour adjustments or grading

13. Adjust all audio levels for all audio tracks: music, sound effects, background sound and voices

14, Apply any audio effects including compressors, gain or noise reduction.

15. Export your video and review. Make sure your test your video on different devices and platforms. Listen with headphones as well as speakers.

16. Repeat any of the above steps.
