Introduction

Ecological restoration projects abound aplenty in the world, from backyard projects to large scale restoration of mine sites. Each project has a story to tell. A story to tell of the practitioners. A story to tell of the science. A story to tell of the culture. A story to tell of social justice. A story to tell of the custodians. A story to tell of the land and sea, and everything in between. Some of these stories are big and loud and roar. But some are a whisper and a dream, an act of healing and a reunion. Every story deserves to be told, deserves to be heard, deserves to be felt.

Following on from the success of the SER2023 Film Festival at the 10th World Conference on Ecological Restoration, the SER2025 Film Festival will be screened at the 11th World Conference on Ecological Restoration in Denver, Colorado, United States on Thursday the 2nd of October, 2025. The SER2025 Film Festival seeks to share stories from and with the delegates of this conference, and with the general public.

This Film Festival addresses a gap in the communication of restoration projects to society more generally. There are scientific papers, and government and agency reports aplenty, most of which are barely accessible to the general public. And those that are, may not be easily understood due to the academic and bureaucratic language used. But the most basic, most fundamental, most historical method for sharing knowledge, for learning, is most simply – storytelling. To sit, and listen, and watch. The Society for Ecological Restoration 2025 Film Festival (SER2025FF) seeks to provide an opportunity for the sharing of knowledge through storytelling using film with selected films to be screened on the night of the festival.

The film festival is open to existing and new films which embody the principles of ecological restoration and explore the relationship between people, science, restoration, and the environment. This training resource has been designed to assist students and ecological restoration professionals to develop quality, cohesive films that do justice to the stories they are telling and that engage the viewing audience within their field of study and/or practice. Entries close Monday 23rd June, 2025.
